Ο καθηγητής λεγόταν Τζέιμς Νάισμιθ και κάπως έτσι γεννήθηκε το άθλημα της καλαθοσφαίρισης. Το μπάσκετ που τόσο πολύ αγαπάει ο κόσμος, που πλέον γύρω του έχει στηθεί χορός δισεκατομμυρίων, που αποτελεί σε πολλές χώρες το δεύτερο δημοφιλέστερο άθλημα, ξεκίνησε ως μία διέξοδος που αναζήτησε ένας καθηγητής φυσικής αγωγής για την άθληση των φοιτητών του, έναν βροχερό Δεκέμβρη. 

 

Ο Καναδός Δρ. Τζέιμς Νάισμιθ, αντιμετώπιζε ένα σημαντικό πρόβλημα, λόγω καιρικών συνθηκών. Οι δραστηριότητες της τάξης του σε εξωτερικό χώρο ήταν αδύνατον να πραγματοποιηθούν στον βαρύ χειμώνα της Μασαχουσέτης. Το κλειστό γυμναστήριο προσέφερε μία εναλλακτική πρόταση στην άθληση με τους κλασικούς τρόπους άσκησης με βάρη και γυμναστική. Βαρετό μετά από ένα διάστημα και ο ανήσυχος καθηγητής έψαχνε να βρει τη λύση. 

 

Μετά από πολλή σκέψη, αποφάσισε να καρφώσει ένα καλάθι ροδάκινων σε ύψος περίπου τρία μέτρα από το έδαφος και όρισε ως στόχο να μπει η μπάλα στο συγκεκριμένο καλάθι. Το πρώτο αρχικό καλάθι διατηρούσε τον πάτο του, γεγονός που υποχρέωνε τους παίκτες να ανεβαίνουν κάθε φορά σε μία σκάλα για να ανακτούν την μπάλα. Μοιραία λοιπόν, η πρώτη καινοτομία ήταν η αφαίρεση του κάτω μέρος του  καλαθιού. Το πρώτο “τζάμπολ” δόθηκε με μία μπάλα ράγκμπι, οι παίκτες έδιναν μόνο πάσες μεταξύ τους, αφού η ντρίπλα με την ακανόνιστου σχήματος αρχική μπάλα δεν ήταν εφικτή και η γέννηση ενός νέου αθλήματος ήταν πια γεγονός. 

 

Στις 15 Ιανουαρίου 1892 ο Τζέιμς Νάισμιθ δημοσίευσε τους πρώτους κανόνες του μπάσκετ σε άρθρο του στην εφημερίδα Triangle της Μασαχουσέτης. Το όνομά του το άθλημα το πήρε από έναν μαθητή του Καναδού γυμναστή, που συνδύασε την μπάλα με το καλάθι….και εγένετο Basketball! Οι αρχικές μπάλες ήταν καφέ μέχρι τα τέλη του 1950 που ο Τόνι Χάινκλ σκέφτηκε ότι το πορτοκαλί χρώμα τις κάνει πιο ευδιάκριτες στους θεατές. Αγαπήθηκε σύντομα από πολύ κόσμο, διαδόθηκε στις Η.Π.Α. και μόλις λίγα χρόνια μετά την ανακάλυψή του, παρουσιάστηκε ως σπορ επίδειξης στους Ολυμπιακούς του 1904 στο Σαιντ Λούις. Στο πρόγραμμα των Θερινών Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων μπήκε οριστικά το 1936 στο Βερολίνο, ενώ από το 1992 επετράπη και η συμμετοχή επαγγελματιών του NBA στους αγώνες. Το 1976 στο Μόντρεαλ έπαιξαν και οι γυναίκες για πρώτη φορά.

 

Το χαρακτηριστικό γνώρισμά του είναι ότι μεταλλάσσεται διαρκώς από την ημέρα που γεννήθηκε. Οι κανόνες παραμένουν στα βασικά τους ίδιοι, αλλά σε σημεία κομβικά για την εικόνα του και την ταχύτητά του, αλλάζουν διαρκώς. Η στρογγυλή μπάλα έφερε την ντρίμπλα, η κατάχρηση του χρόνου έφερε το χρονόμετρο για την κάθε επίθεση, η δυνατότητα να σκοράρεις από μακριά έφερε το τρίποντο, η ταχύτητα στην εναλλαγή των φάσεων έφερε τη μείωση του χρόνου επίθεσης και πλέον το μπάσκετ είναι ελκυστικότατο στα μάτια των τηλεθεατών και απολαυστικό να το παρακολουθείς από κοντά. 

 

Στις 18 Ιουνίου του 1932 ιδρύθηκε η FIBA από εκπροσώπους 8 χωρών, μεταξύ των οποίων και η Ελλάδα. Ο πρώτος αγώνας σε ελληνικό έδαφος έγινε το 1918, στο γήπεδο της ΧΑΝ Αθηνών, με τοποθετημένες δύο ανεστραμμένες καρέκλες για καλάθια και μία μπάλα ποδοσφαίρου. Ο Μάικ Στεργιάδης, μαθητής του Νάισμιθ, ήταν μεταξύ των πρώτων παικτών. Η επίσημη ιστορία για το μπάσκετ στην Ελλάδα ξεκίνησε το 1927 υπό τον ΣΕΓΑΣ. Αποτελεί πολύ δημοφιλές άθλημα στη χώρα μας και σίγουρα το πιο επιτυχημένο από πλευράς κατάκτησης τίτλων. Η Εθνική μας ομάδα έχει κατακτήσει 2 χρυσά, 1 ασημένιο και 2 χάλκινα  σε Ευρωμπάσκετ και 1 ασημένιο μετάλλιο σε Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα. Οι Σύλλογοί μας από την άλλη έχουν κατακτήσει 19 ευρωπαϊκά τρόπαια, 18 οι άνδρες και 1 η γυναικεία ομάδα του Αθηναϊκού, το 2010.
