Το σοκ ήταν τεράστιο γιατί ουσιαστικά κανείς δεν γνώριζε. Ο Αλέξανδρος Νικολαΐδης συνειδητά επέλεξε να αφήσει μακριά από τα φώτα της δημοσιότητας το πρόβλημα υγείας που αντιμετώπιζε. Τα φώτα της δημοσιότητας που τόσο τον “ήθελαν” όταν μεσουρανούσε στα τατάμι όλου του κόσμου. Ο Αλέξανδρος Νικολαΐδης έφυγε και μας αποχαιρέτησε έτσι όπως έζησε και πορεύτηκε σε όλη του την ζωή. Με ταπεινότητα και αξιοπρέπεια.
Πρωί της 14ης Οκτωβρίου του 2022 και ξαφνικά όλα τα social media κατακλύστηκαν από την είδηση του θανάτου του δύο φορές αργυρού Ολυμπιονίκη. Την είδηση ακολουθούσε μία ανάρτηση του ίδιου. Ένα κείμενο βαθιά προσωπικό, αλλά ταυτόχρονα και πανανθρώπινο. Ένα κείμενο αποχωρισμού, χωρίς καμία προσπάθεια να εκμαιεύσει τον οίκτο ή την λύπη. Ένα κείμενο ωδή στην ζωή, ωδή στην προσφορά, ωδή στην κοινωνική ενσυναίσθηση. Ένα κείμενο γεμάτο αγάπη για τον συνάνθρωπο, ένα κείμενο κληρονομιά για τα παιδιά του και την σύντροφο της ζωής του. Ο Αλέξανδρος αναχώρησε για κάπου καλύτερα ή για το πουθενά, όπως είπε ο ίδιος, δείχνοντας ότι η ζωή είναι στιγμές. Η ζωή είναι αποφάσεις και το αποτύπωμα που θα αφήσεις φεύγοντας είναι καθαρά δική σου απόφαση, δική σου θέληση, δική σου ευθύνη.
Ο Αλέξανδρος Νικολαΐδης μας έδειξε έναν δρόμο. Έναν δρόμο δύσκολο και ενίοτε μοναχικό. Ένιωσε την ανάγκη να προσφέρει και μετά θάνατον. Τα δύο ολυμπιακά του μετάλλια θα βγουν στη δημοπρασία για να σωθούν παιδιά που έρχονται αντιμέτωπα με τον καρκίνο. Ακόμα και ένα παιδί να σωθεί, υπογράμμισε, θα έχει αποκτήσει αυτόματα αξία κάθε κλωτσιά και κάθε κάταγμα που υπέστη στην αθλητική του καριέρα. Σήμερα η Ελλάδα θρηνεί έναν ήρωα, θρηνεί ένα πρότυπο. Ο Αλέξανδρος Νικολαΐδης δεν ήταν ένας Ολυμπιονίκης στα τατάμι, αλλά ένας Ολυμπιονίκης της ζωής. Είναι η απόδειξη ότι ο αθλητισμός μπορεί να δημιουργήσει πρότυπα για τις νέες γενιές αρκεί όλοι εμείς να επιλέξουμε τον δρόμο που μας έδειξε. Τον δρόμο που δεν οδηγεί στην εφήμερη αναγνωρισιμότητα, που δεν οδηγεί στα πολυάριθμα like. Τον δρόμο που οδηγεί στην προσφορά, στην κοινωνική αλληλεγγύη.
Αντίο σε έναν πραγματικά μεγάλο άνθρωπο πρώτα και μετά τεράστιο αθλητή. Η παρακαταθήκη που αφήνει σε όλους μας είναι πολύ μεγαλύτερη από τις έτσι κι αλλιώς σπουδαίες επιτυχίες του.
